An interesting blog post at Shanghaiist highlights Michael Phelps's effort to market himself to Chinese audiences. Has anyone out there heard anything about Phelps's popularity in China?
Swimmer Michael Phelps is doing his best to make sure that Chinese fans have access to information about him. He had his personal Web site, Michaelphelps.com, built in just two languages—English and simplified Chinese.
Phelps, four gold medals into his attempt to win an unprecedented 8 Olympic swimming titles in Beijing, is a hot topic in China right now and it looks like his efforts to keep it that way extend beyond the pool. Smart man.

I don't remember where I read this, but a survey given last summer already shows that most Chinese can recognize Phelps after a researcher showed them a photo of him. He's quite popular I'd say. Most of my relatives in China knows who he is. I think that most of the WORLD who watches Olympics know who he is.
