Michael Vaughan is England's most successful captain - he won 26 of his 51 matches in charge - had to break off his announcement on more than one occasion as he held back the tears following his decision to quit the job after five years in charge.
The 33-year-old's announcement came at a hastily arranged press conference in Loughborough less than 24 hours after he said he would "let the dust settle" on his team's defeat.
Vaughan has struggled with the bat in recent seasons, but England supporters will always remember him as the man who led the team to their first Ashes series win for 20 years in 2005.

michael was an excellent and thoughtful test captain, thoroughly deserving of his highly successful record. he deserved to go out on much more of a high than this, and his resignation has left many fans and players in shock. with a steady personality and calm demeanour, his (very rare) show of emotion when announcing his resignation showed just how much the role and the team meant to him, and how much recent events had taken their toll.
although recent times have seen him struggling with the bat, when he's in form he's an absolute joy to watch with a range of elegant and classical strokes. let's hope that the break from test cricket is temporary, and that his return to the yorkshire team give him the space needed to regain his peace of mind and refresh his talent. he's an absolute class act.

One of the greatest moments in English cricketing history and Vaughny's life. The Ashes victory parade in London. Trafalgar Square. I was there!

I am a Cruise Ship Entertainer and on this day disembarked in Barbados. I bumped into the Aussie team who had just arrived for the World Cup last year. As I flew into Gatwick, there was Michael, Freddie and the boys. I had seen them play around the World and Michael being a good Yorkshireman, like myself, agreed to the photo.
The pressure as Captain must have been immense at times, especially with his bad run of injuries. Its very sad that he resigned but hopefully he will help Yorkshire onwards and upwards.
Lets never forget that fantastic Ashes victory.
