Miguel Cotto was declared the winner after the ringside doctor Barry Jordan determined that Antonio Margarito's left eye was too badly injured for the fight to continue. Though he said that Miguel Cotto "hits like a girl", Margarito needed 12 stitches for his eye after the fight.

If the fight hadn't been stopped, Antonio Margarito would have needed to knock Miguel Cotto out to win the fight, as Cotto was well ahead on points by Round 10.
