Mike Missanelli and Skip Bayless Have Nasty Exchange On 950 ESPN

ESPN personality Skip Bayless had a rather nasty appearance on 950 espn in Philadelphia. The bombastic host of First Take spoke with radio host Mike Missanelli about comments he made about Philadelphia sports fans.

When speaking about alleged abuse by Dallas Mavericks fans towards Carmelo Anthony's girlfriend during the Mavs-Nuggets playoff series, Bayless described Dallas fans' behavior as "Philly-style rude, crude, dangerous".

Mikey Miss called Bayless out on the comment, saying that Philly fans have been unfarily bashed for too long. Philly sports fans have long been criticized for being violent and hostile. Most famously, Philly fans once booed and threw snowballs at Santa Claus at a 1968 Philadelphia Eagles game.

According to Missanelli, Philly fans have largely cleaned up their act and that the image of the boorish Philly fan no longer applies. He then called out Bayless for perpetuating an outdated stereotype.

Bayless dismissed the accusation, mostly by claiming that he had never heard of Missanelli and that he witnessed several violent acts at Philadelphia Eagles in the 1990s.

I am not a Skip Bayless fan; but I agree with him when it comes to Philly sports fans. I live in Atlanta, and as recently couple of years ago they insulted one of the Two Live Stews, who were there as Falcon fans, not as reporters covering the game. I think it came close to fisticuffs. Most things written about those fans I for one believe it to be true.

Of course you, for one, think it's true, why?  Becuase you're actually clueless, that's why.  Yes i'm from Philly, and i guess you're going to take your ball and go cry home now because i'm a "thug".  Awwww, a Falcon Fan was insulted!?!?!  Oh no!!  You know what you don't hear about?  Me going to a Ravens game in Baltimore and getting pretzels thrown at me in the upper level.  So why Mr. Atlanta, is it not "Baltimore Style, Rude Crude Behavior"??  Next, please see NLCS last year in Los Angeles when the Phillies were in LA.  Ask about the treatment Philly fans received there!  The verbal harrasement, some physical altercations.  How about in Clevelend when Browns fans littered the field with bottles?  What about in Detroit where fans fought players in the stands and threw beers?  My point here?  yes it happens in Philadelphia, but the problem is that we have not yet shed this image of it happening all the time, which it does not, and we've become the poster boy for it.  It happens everywhere, in every city ,in every stadium, yet it's always "Philly behavior"  Cut me an f'ing break. Did you watch the Nuggets game the other night?  Probably not because you're from Atlanta and you don't follow sports being fairweather and all.  Talk about thuggish behavior, Mark Cuban.  Why is it not "Dallas Style Rude Crude Behavior?"

As much as I hate Skip Bayless....you've got to side with him here, and Missinelli proved it by being a complete scumbag on the air and then flaunting it like he had somehow won the argument by blindsiding a guy who clearly didn't care at all with a useless argument. It's people like Missanelli who are continuing the stereotype of "rude, crude, dangerous" philly fans...what a jerk

He's more like Skip Clueless. Here is a guy who was happy to get any attention by being invited on Mike Missanelli's show then all of a sudden Mike is a nobody in Skippy's opinion because he wanted an explanation for something Skip said publically? All of a sudden it turns into what is your name again? How long have you been in the business?   Give me a city who's won anything and I'll give you examples of something they've done to ruin their reputation (or just read JRNJ526 post above, who said it perfectly). How 'bout the Washington fans throwing bottles at Jeff Carter of the Flyers after they eliminated the Capitals in the playoffs on April 23, 2008? Lets hear about 2008, not 1968. 2008- Bottle, players, 20 feet away 1968- snowball, man in Santa costume, 50 yards away? Neither is right but give me the snowball from 50 yards away.   Apparently Mike Missanelli is somebody as far as ESPN is concerned, they hired him and he's got the #1 radio show in the afternoon in Philly. I never knew who Skip Bayless was but now I know him as the guy who was afraid to come to Philadelphia (10+ years ago) and couldn't backup his comments on a radio show. He finished second in a two man debate. I guess when I think of Dallas for the next 40 years I'll think of the city where Skip Clueless is from. I wonder if Skip or any of the other dolts who bring up the "Philly fans" even know the true story. At halftime, there was supposed to be a Christmas pageant. Then there was too much snow and muck for a float to parade around the field. Instead, a 19-year-old fan wearing a Santa suit and fake beard in the stands was recruited to jog onto the field between two columns of cheerleaders. The guy wearing the Santa costume, Frank Olivo, who now lives in Ocean City, N.J. says he has no hard feelings. "I'm a Philadelphia fan, I knew what was what. I thought it was funny," he is quoted as saying.

JRNJ526 & ajms,Thank you for your comments and thank you, Mikey Miss for trying to address a stereotype of Philly fans.  The Santa thing is so old, I don't think some of the ESPN talking heads were alive when it happened.  Thanks, ajms, for telling the real story.  I think Mike's main point is that there are thugs and goons at every stadium, so why do we get the bad rap for fan behavior.  If you haven't been to the Linc, Bank, or Wachovia Center, you don't have a clue.  I'm not going to say that I haven't seen some crazy things at any of those arenas, but you're a fool if you think that it doesn't happen elsewhere.  Also, if you're too thin-skinned to take a little verbal abuse, grow a pair.  I've seen Giants fans who are wise to this and they'll take the inevitable "ASSHOLE" chant in stride knowing that they are out-numbered 50,000 to 1.  I've never seen any harm done to them.  Others may say otherwise, but consider it an isolated incident and not reflective of the crowd as a whole.  When fans of the other teams start to provoke the home-town crowd is when things get dicey.  Yes, there are drunken idiots who will pick a fight with you if are wearing a Cowboys jersey; they are the minority.  For those who hold us in contempt for the Michael Irvin incident, two words: "Deion Sanders", check your facts.
