MISSION CITY BOXING CLUB hosts fight card: By Brian W. Zelley
It was only two weeks after arriving back from the competition in the 2010 Golden Gloves and the Mission City Boxing Club was ready for more action with the staging of a amateur boxing card at the Leq'a mel Community Centre on May 1st. The main event featured JESSY BROWN vs LEV JACKSON, with Jessy winning **************************************************************************
LEV JACKSON was one of a number of boxers that travelled from the historical boxing club - the ASTORIA FRASER ARMS BOXING CLUB. The Astoria boxing Club has an interesting history that goes back to the mid-Sixties with WALTER BOYCE and some of the former members of Pat O'Reilly's Hastings Community Centre Boxing Club such as Wayne Boyce, Clint Page, Rick Fleck, Glen McGee and others.

By the mid-Seventies, keys to the club changed hands when former members of the old North West Eagles Boxing Club with the late ELIO IUS stepping in as head coach and later others would run the show before moving from the old Astoria Hotel on Hasting's to the Fraser Arms Hotel location near Marine Drive in south Vancouver close to Richmond. **************************************************************************
Coaches for the Mission City Boxing Club are DALE GATIN, MATT BROWN & MARK PONTING. Funds raised from the boxing card are expected to help with the travel expenses to the "Ringside World Championships" in Kansas CIty, Mo. in AUGUST.

One of the interesting bouts was a match featuring two junior boxers that had participated in the BC Golden Gloves in Langford. Acambell River boxer competing for the Nanaimo Boxing Club faced a Mission City boxer and earned the decision.
Of interest, in a local newspaper article in thew Campbell River region, the Nanaimo boxer outlined the basis of his victory was by studying his opponent warming up for the bout. In the warm-up, it was stated that the Mission Boxer was dropping his right hand when throwing left jabs. So he was open for left hooks. Interesting observation, but for open class senior boxers, a left hook may not be the right strategy.
Also, a win or loss in a club show is not the important outcome, the most important outcome would be what training steps the boxers take as they move forward to sharpen their positive skills and minimize the errors and negative procedures. High level performance will only come after years of training and competition with a wide range of opponents with different skills.
