MLB Teams that came back from 3-1 World Series Deficit
Only 6 teams have ever come back from a 3 games to 1 deficit in the World Series. The NL has done it twice, compared to AL's four times.
The last time that it happened was in 1985, when the Royals came back to beat the Cardinals.
1. 1903 Boston Americans (Red Sox), down 1-3, won World Series 5-3 over Pittsburgh (best of nine format).
2. 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Washington.
3. 1958 New York Yankees, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Milwaukee.
4. 1968 Detroit Tigers, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.
5. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over Baltimore.
6. 1985 Kansas City Royals, down 1-3, won World Series 4-3 over St. Louis.
What does this mean for the Phillies? Absolutely nothing. But if you really want to read something in the numbers, I have a couple of nuggets for you.
- Four of the six teams that came back from 3-1 won the last two games on the road. The '79 Pirates won the last two games in Baltimore, the '68 Tigers won the last two games in St. Louis, the '58 Yankees won the last two games in Milwaukee, and the '25 Pirates won the last two games in Washington.
- It hasn't happened in 24 years. The longest period between teams coming back from 3-1 deficit is 23 years, '25-'58. The second longest was 22 years, '03-'25. If history is any indication, then we should be due for another 3-1 deficit comeback.

"If history is any indication, then we should be due for another 3-1 deficit comeback." Yay! The Phillies have a chance...though some people in Philly seem gloomy! The champs took the train, yes, the Amtrak train to NYC yesterday, and one person commented on The Inquirer website..."leave Hamels and Lidge on the platform!" I think that the Phillies do have some momentum. Thanks for the history report.
