MLB Urban Invitational 2012: Day 1 Results
Due to impending rain and possible flooding in the Houston area, the first day’s action at the 2012 Urban Invitational was moved from Sylvester Turner Park in north Houston to Minute Maid Park.
Game times were reset for 8:00AM, 11:00AM and 2:00PM on Friday.
The first game of the tripleheader, the Southern Jaguars shutout the Prairie View A&M Panthers 6-0.
Centerfielder Wilmy Marrero was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
In the second game of the day, Jordan Fox went 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead UC-Irvine to a 5-3 win over Alabama State.
In the nightcap, Texas Southern Tigers downed Grambling State 6-5
Cameron Logan went 2-for-5 as the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the score at 5-all.
They then came back in the top of the 10th inning to take a one run lead for their first win of the season.
Action will continue on Saturday with three games scheduled; Alabama State vs. Grambling State at 11:00AM, UC-Irving vs. Southern at 3:00PM and Texas Southern vs. Prairie View at 7:00PM.
Grammy-nominated singer Ruben Studdard was scheduled to perform the National Anthem prior to the 3:00PM game, but will be replaced by Paris Bennett. Studdard canceled the performance due to a loss in the family.
In other college baseball action around Houston, the Houston Cougars postponed their season-kickoff game against Delaware on Friday evening due to weather.
They will play a double-header on Saturday with the first game scheduled for 2:00PM. The second game will begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
