A six-year-old boy was killed after an accident at a Monster Jam monster-truck show in Tacoma, WA. Sebastian Hizey of Puyallup, WA, was struck by a metal object that flew into the crowd and struck him in the head. Feld Motor Sports, the promoters of the Monster Jam event, have not given an official cause for the accident. Several witnesses, however, claim that the accident was caused by debris coming off of a monster truck named "Natural High."

After being hit, Hizey was sent to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The family stated that the boy died from severe brain trauma after being hit a 7-to12-pound metal ring from a truck. Not surprisingly, the family said they were "grief-stricken and angry."

Another unidentified man was also injured by a flying object at the Monster Jam show.

Christine Moe, who was at the event, told KING-TV a truck came apart while heading toward the end of the grandstands during the freestyle competition right after intermission.

"Parts were falling off and a piece flew up and hit a little boy," Moe said.

Witnesses said a red truck was doing doughnuts — driving in tight circles — when debris flew 30 to 50 feet over a safety barrier and into the stands. Some told the TV station they had to throw cups off the stands to get the attention of medics.

Feld Motor Sports says that they are investigating the incident, as are local authorities.

Feld Motor Sports, the promoters of the Monster Jam event, says that still aren't sure what caused the accident.

Where you wrote 'that aren't sure', should say 'they still aren't sure.'

Thanks for covering this story.

Good coverage Job, something that should be a headline, but with the Obamarama taking the glory, your story like most will be regaled to UFO sightings section unfortunately.

Certainly a tragic event, trucks doing donuts at high speeds, guess many do not know about centrifugal forces on auto parts. Like they say, its only fun till someone gets killed.

The truck was not doing donuts.    Anyone that watches the videos of the show can clearly see that no donuts... no, not even one donut...  was done during the truck's run.

This is horrible, Not only do they pollute and kill the environment, now they kill directly due to lack of safeties.

However I have to admit it is the first time I have heard of such accident at a Monster Truck Show.

This is the only time it has ever happened.  They dont pollute and kill the environment any more than any other sport.  Just because they are loud does not mean they pollute more.

its funny that every news report says the truck was doing donuts yet in the video they keep showing over and over shows the truck doing nothing of the sort, it did a wheelie came down on a car and rolled to a stop.... maybe they should check the credibility of the witnessess

I'm from Ontario Canada 26 yr's old and from the first moment I heard about this incident I said to myself "Here come the CRITICS." the damn people that have never even heard of a Monster Truck. (and yet proof positive I come to this site and all some woman can say is "They pollute, and now they kill due to lack of safety.") The only thing I can say to these people is LEARN before you speak on something your not famillar with.

As for the family involved, All I have to say is that the incident was very unfortunate, but you can't hate on the driver of the truck or the USHRA Monster Jam series (i've seen the interview) because if the incident didn't happen to you you would've been back the next year. If the incident happened under different circumstances and your son would have say "caught" the peice of metal, You probably would've had it autographed.

The father went on saying "what if I would've...., or maybe if we we're sitting....." The fact is you sat where your ticket that you purchased told you sit, and you we're at a MOTORSPORTS event, I know your not dumb so having to tell you that something just might go wrong shouldn't apply. No matter how safe you make something someone's always gonna find fault with it. They put safety guards on machines in factories but people still manage to end up dead or at least have some fingers cut off but they don't shut the factories down do they. Shit Happens, sorry for your loss. Move on 'cause you have other children to worry about.

I am so sorry to hear you are more concerned that the public may bad mouth the fine sport of Motor Cross Freestyling than concerned for the emotions of the friends and family of the dead child.  The children you say he should be worrying about, he certainly is since they personally witnesses their brother's head be splattered by a 10 pound hunk of metal. Can you at least feel something close to respect for those poor traumatized children?  WOW you are a sad little human.  I will stop here since you likely are hoping for an explosion of angry responses to your pure lack of emotional intelligence. You move on, preferrably to a war torn third world country where you will not have the pleasure of sitting on your couch watching your big screen tv.

I would like to start by offering my condolences to the family.  I am sorry for you lost.  Now moving on to the rest of you bone heads out there that want to disgrace the monster truck industry, how many people have been killed since 1988 til 2009 at a monster truck show?  4-8 should be your answer, because you can do all the research you want and will find the same numbers no matter where you look.  Now, how many people have been killed in NASCAR between 1988 til 2009? 2 people every year are killed in accidents or from debry flying from the tracks.  Again, do your research.  Now I ask you this, if so many are killed, why do people still watch it and attend the events?  There is a very simple answer... people love motor sports, no matter what it is.  This accident was plain and simple, an accident.  NO ONE has the right to blame the promoters, drivers or the owners of the trucks.  That lil boy could have been killed just as easy riding in his parents vehicle by a drunk driver.... oh but excuse me, that happens every day doesn't it so there is no attention focused on that.  I ask you out of the kindness of everyones heart, leave the monster truck industry, the drivers, the owners and the promoters alone about the accident.  Not everyone is scared to attend.....

As you stated it is very rare for there to be a death (although two in ONE week). BUT that is what people should be looking at. Rarely happens because people are making safe wise choices and following regulations.  Not just speed repairs to get a truck back in the ring. The reason this is not just an accident, is that proper maintenance, driving and decision making of whether to bring Natural High back in the ring are what caused this "accident" Once there is a cause to an accident there has to be and there is someone to blame.  If the drunk driver hit him instead he would go to jail. Litigation and lawsuits assist in creating much needed change. Now maybe they will put safety barriers up in all areas not just the limited ones they think are more likely to need it.  It is a guessing game, bring the broken down truck back in or not? Hey Natural High is what they paid for that is what they are going to get. If people are bad mouthing the industry, which markets to children's families, they are also ignorant.  Generally these are safe fun places for families to create memories. Due to some poor decision making it was not fun or safe for one family.

ha! Thanks. This is what I love about the internet. It helps people connect.

Just because I wasn't POLITICALLY correct in what I said you guys jump on me. Think for a moment. Maybe there's a reason for him thinking like he does.

I feel for that family sincerely, go ahead and read it again. I thank you all for caring so much about what a single man had to say about an unfortunate incident.

And please don't be so quick to judge people that's the worst thing happening in this world today. Thank you and take of each other.

My 9 year old nephew and I attended a recent Monster Jam truck show and were sitting in section B.  At the very end of the show, while watching Maximum Destruction's finale, the truck turned on it's side and a piece of metal shot up and missed my nephew by inches.  It hit the back of his seat directly, and sounded like a gunshot.  Thank God he was leaning a little to the left a little, otherwise, I'm sure he would have been killed.  Needless to say, we were pretty shaken up.  So, I guess that would almost have been another statistic.  The incident was reported to the Marketing Manager of Feld Motor Sports, and she was very concerned and assisted us.  I plan on writing to the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh where the venue was held.  I really feel for the family who lost their child.  I hope there are no more deaths before they think of something to make it more safe for the audience, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that something has to be done to protect the people in the closer rows, which includes a majority of children.

I represent the family of the boy who was killed in Tacoma.  In spite of what others may claim, and as you know, this was not the first time that chunks of metal flew off a monster truck and crashed into the seats.  I would like to talk to you about your experience.  Please call me in Seattle at 206-448-1777.  Thanks very much.

The Sage

I have been around motorsports my whole life. When I was about 8 yrs old and attending a race at my local dirt track in the late 70's, a tire came off a car, flew to the 15 row of the stands and killed a man that was sitting next to me.

Did it scare me...Yes!

Did it spur concernes about safety issues...Yes!

Did it stop people from attending or even put an end to the evening show?...No!

My point being that people are drawn to dangerous and risky things by nature, there is a natural need for the rush. It is unfortunate everyone thinks that accidents and bad things only happen to other people...until it happens to them!

If you do not bother to think about the fact that there is risk in attending a motorsport event you should not be there. No matter what precautions are taken...concrete walls, 15 foot chain link fence...etc. you must realize the simple fact that "TONS" of racing vehicle traveling anywhere from 80 to 120 mph is not going to be stopped by any standard chain link fence if it goes out of control! Your commuter car will go through a brick wall at 40 mph and so will a loose part of any reasonable weight at those speeds.

We all love our children and wish no harm on them or anyone elses child but the simple fact is we go to theme parks by the millions each year and strap our beloveds into a high speed rollercoasters with only a lap belt and a safety bar that does not even touch your childs body if there is an adult in the car with them. Now how comforting is the the thought of high speed loops and upside down twists.

The Truck accident with the boy was a genuine horror, but people must always keep in mind the risks they take for entertainment on a daily basis. Always be aware, rely your own judgement and do not put so much trust the fact that others say things are totally safe. Think about the possibilities and situations you put yourself and loved ones in, sometimes the rush and enjoyment are not worth the risk even though everyone else is doing it!

May you and yours be safe always!

This was a freak accident, Monster Truck promoters and series have gone through rigorous steps to try to prevent death and personal injury to their drivers, officials, and fans.  Things happen, the same way that thousands of planes fly every day but every once in a while, something goes horribly wrong and one crashes.

This could have easily of happened at a speedway, or even on a highway.

Personally as a fan of monster trucks for over 20 years, the freestyle competition which has been made famous by the Monster Jam tours have really pushed the envelope of these drivers and trucks to see how far they can go with them, it was much better and probably safer when they were more organized and kept to side-by-side racing in open areas as they did in the early to mid 90's...but then again the general public would rather see flips, crashes, and $100k pieces of machinery tear themselves apart in the name of entertainment.

THIS TOTALLY SUCKS in every facet possible.  For the boy, the family, the DRIVER, promotors, sponsers, EVERYONE.

What to do?   Well-  consider that progress isn't made from success!!!

Which means those in charge of these trucks and shows WILL find a way to ensure this NEVER EVER happens again!!   AND we, as fans, have to accept whatever choices are made as a result and remember they are made for our benefit.  For our safty and ENJOYMENT!  All of us want to see metal and sparks flying - NONE of us want to lose life, property, or limb in the process!!

None of us!!

Perchance if every Monster Jam fan coughed up $20 bucks OR more,(match what you spend at a rally), we can sway the families angst just a little.   ????

My condolences to the family, the sport, and the fans for this tragic tragic loss!!

With Love

Julie
