Its official, Mumbai will host the Cricket World Cup 2011, Final match. The finals will be played at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India is co-hosting the matches with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The original co-hosts Pakistan were stripped of their quota of matches by the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this year due to
security concerns.
India is hosting 29 matches while Sri Lanka has a quota of 12 and Bangladesh 8 matches. Bangladesh will also host the opening ceremony in Dhaka on February 18, 2011.
Fourteen teams will compete for the
World Cup in two groups. Each team will play every other team in its group. The top four teams in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals - making a total of 49 games. While India has announced all the venues for the matches, the actual list and schedule of individual matches will be announced on November 9, 2009 in Mumbai.
The Wankhede Stadium is being specially renovated for the match.
