MUSSOORIE, 3 Aug: A seminar on the deplorable condition of sports in Mussoorie was organised by the “Khel Sangh” at the Nagar Palika premises, today. The President of the Sangh, Nand Kishore Bhamboo, invited representatives of various social, cultural and sports organisations for the discussion on means to improve the standard of sports here.
Various speakers offered their suggestions on the occasion. The speakers highlighted the fact that the lack of a stadium was a major hindrance in promotion of sports here.
Bhamboo, an international roller-skating referee, agreed with other speakers on the demand for a stadium in Mussoorie. He strongly suggested that till the time the town did not get a good stadium, it would be impossible to improve the quality of sports here. He also suggested that the land for the stadium was available near “Bhilaru” on the road to Kempty Falls. Bhamboo further lamented that nothing in this regard was done despite the efforts of the “Khel Sangh” during the tenure of previous presidents of the Nagar Palika.
He alleged that the land in Bhilaru that was being suggested for the stadium was transferred to Rajaji National Park during the tenure of Jot Singh Gunsola when he was President of the Nagar Palika in 1989. Bhamboo requested the present President, OP Uniyal, to look into the matter and reclaim the land for the use of the stadium.
Bhamboo was also critical of English medium Public Schools that had downgraded the importance of School “Olympics” held here annually. He further claimed that the English medium public schools of Mussoorie were not interested in including Hindi medium schools into the fold of the School Olympics fearing defeat at the hands of these small schools. The divide of Christian and non-Christian Schools was also harming the cause of sports promotion in the town. He appealed to all concerned to unite in the name of sports and revive the glorious past of Mussoorie.
Ram Kumar suggested that Palika land at Spring Roads could be surveyed for the stadium.
