When head coach Mike Gundy leads his Oklahoma State Cowboys into their first home game Sept. 5 against Houston, he’ll lead them into Boone Pickens Stadium, a totally-refurbished football facility dubbed by members of the Fiesta Bowl Committee as “the finest football facilities anywhere in the country.”

It had better be the best. After all, the stadium’s namesake, OSU alum T. Boone Pickens — yes, the oilman I’ve mentioned several times in posts on my blog, Bob McCarty Writes — has given $235 million to the university in Stillwater during the past five years, and a large chunk of that is aimed at turning the school’s football program into a national powerhouse.

Part of the turn-around effort, as i stated at the end of a football-related post yesterday, must include a decision by my alma mater’s athletic director Mike Holder to part ways with Gundy at the end of this season if the Cowboys don’t win the Big XII Conference title this year. After all, the quarterback-turned-head coach has had three seasons to turn things around and, if that’s not enough, he’s been able to dangle a huge “carrot” in front of wide-eyed recruits. Haven’t heard about the new facilities? Click here to watch a video and learn all about it.
