National U.S. Olympic Basketball Week August 7-14, 2011
July 10, 2011- The NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) Foundation will proclaim August 7, 2011 to August 14, 2011 as National U.S. Olympic Basketball Week.
The proclaimed week observance is to honor the 75th Anniversary of basketball becoming an official sport at 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
Team USA defeated the Canadian National Team 19-8 to win the first-ever gold medal for basketball.
Dr. James Naismith the inventor of the game of basketball was on hand and presented the Olympic medals to the 3 medal winning teams.
Women's basketball became an official Olympic sport 40-years later at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal Canada. The Soviet National Team defeated Team USA to win the gold medal. Team USA won the silver medal led by Hall-of-Famer's Nancy Lieberman, Anne Meyers, and Pat Summitt. Summit coached Team USA to a gold-medal in 1984 at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She has won 8 National Championships at the University of Tennessee.
This year (2011) marks the 35th Anniversary (1976) of women's basketball as an Olympic sport. Team USA won its first Olympic basketball game on July 20, 1976 95-79 over Bulgaria. They lost their first Olympic basketball game a day earlier on July 19th to Japan 84-71. The women's Olympic Basketball Tournament was held from July 19-26.
Team USA (men) defeated Yugoslavia to win the gold medal for basketball. The 1976 Summer Olympics was the the 9th Olympic Basketball Tournament.
