Slate Magazine's NBC Olympics Sapometer is up and running again for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Slate is keeping track of the occurrence of sappy words on NBC's Olympics coverage, words like dad, mom, dream, journey, and magic. In the opening weekend, the Sap-o-Meter has reached 154.

The complete list of the 35 sappy words are: adversity, battled, cancer, challenges, courage, cry, dad, daughter, death, dedication, determination, dream, emotion, father, glory, golden, heart, hero, inspiration, inspire, journey, magic, memory, mom, mother, overcome, passion, patriotic, proud, sacrifice, son, spirit, tears, tragedy, triumph.

The Sapometer reached an all-time high at 68 Sap Points on Friday's opening night. The biggest contributor was Vancouver Organizing Committee's John Furlong.

Our inaugural Sappiest Line of the Day, courtesy Mr. Furlong, tallied an impressive seven Sap Points on its own: "As the Olympic cauldron is lit, the unique magic of the Olympic Games will be released upon us. Magic so rare that it cannot be controlled by borders. The kind of magic that invades the human heart touching people of all cultures and beliefs. Magic that calls for the best that human beings have to offer. Magic that causes the athletes of the world to soar—and the rest of us to dream."

In 2008, the NBC Olympics Sapometer reached 722 sappy words, including 98 occurrences of mom, and 97 dreams.

I am an upset American... The winter games are my MOST FAVORITE televised event of all time... i watch religiously every morning, evening, and even the late night coverage is saved for my enjoyment on my DVR.. I live in the Mountain standard time zone, why is there absolutely NO TELEVISED LIVE COVERAGE?  This is now the SECOND WINTER GAMES that NBC has made this decision to not televise the games live AT ANY POINT!I am upset with your company decisions and intend to BOYCOTT your coverage for future summer and winter games coverage-- because of your lousy decision making    *****I have PAID AMERICAN DOLLARS to become a member of CANADIAN TELEVISION RINGS that DO cover the olympics live (at least online- and more than hockey and curling) and will continue to take my AMERICAN dollars and dump them into FOREIGN MARKETS to enjoy this privilege of live coverage... BE AMERICAN NBC!!!!! COVER ALL OLYMPICS LIVE!!! FOR THE GOOD OF AMERICA!!!!
