NBHHCM 2010, "Old School Rap Day" June 27th
The NBHHCM Foundation www.NBHHCM.org has declared June 27, 2010 as "Old School Rap Day" for NBHHCM 2010 (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month).
June 27th of each year will be dedicated to all old school rap songs and rap artists that have been pioneers and legends to the hip-hop culture. The Sugar Hill Gang released the first major successful rap song in 1979 when they debuted "Rappers Delight."
During the early years of hip-hop most rap songs focused on having fun. Rap pioneer DJ Kool Herc introduced the world to the hip-hop culture in the early 1970's when he added the break-beat to Funk and James Brown songs at a block party in the Bronx, NY.
Grandmaster Flash (2007) and RUN-DMC (2009) have both been introduced into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. LL Cool J was a finalist in 2010.
The fusion of basketball and hip-hop was first put to wax by Hurt Em' Bad in 1982 with the rap song 'N.B.A. Rap' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWUhIBR1kqc. Kurtis Blow released the much more publicized rap song 'Basketball' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_shxzlTRK44 in 1984. 1984 was the birth-year of the hoops and hip-hop culture fusion that is known today as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America.
Michael Jordan the first superstar player of the era was drafted by the Chicago Bulls that same year in 1984.
Today June 27, 2010 is "Old School Rap Day."
