NCAA Tournament 2010: Top Buzzer Beater Videos, A Review
Top Buzzer Beaters in NCAA Tournament - A video review of past March Madness Buzzer Beater shots
As the NCCA tournament 2010 gets into full swing Thursday it holds the promise of exciting with last second buzzer beaters. March Madness is indeed full of unlikely heroes draining the last second shot and sometimes even dunk. So, it may be worth while to review the top NCAA tournament Buzzer Beaters. (see buzzer beater videos at the bottom of the page)
In the history of the NCAA tournament there has been an astounding number of buzzer beaters it is virtually impossible to come up with a list everyone can agree on. Is it Christain Lattner the Duke star beating Kentucky in the 5th overtime with 2.1 second left, advancing Duke to the Final Four in 1992?
One could go back to NC State vs Houston when Lorenzo Charles turned a virtual air ball into a last second buzzer beater to win the NCAA championship in 1983 - a last second buzzer beating shot that many say was the most thrilling because it was for the National Championship.
Head coach Jim Valvano’s underdog Wolfpack team had fought the heavily-favored Houston Cougars all game, sticking right with Phi Slamma Jamma, led by future NBA Hall of Famers Hakeem (then Akeem) Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. With the game tied at 52 and time running down, NC State point guard Derek Whittenburg heaved a 30-foot three-pointer to try and win it. Recognizing that the shot was going to fall short, Charles, who was not being blocked out, rose up, caught the ball and slammed it home, right before time expired.
The lasting memory was Valvano, one of college basketball’s all-time great personalities, running around frantically looking for someone to hug.
