The New York Marathon is set for tomorrow and many of the city's streets will be cut off to traffic to allow more than 38,000 runners onto the streets through the Big Apple.

The event is a massive undertaking with thousands of runners and more than a million spectators who will be entertained by 120 live bands and entertainers along the 26.2 mile route that works its way through the city's five boroughs.

"What sets New York apart is that it's a 26.2 mile (42.195-kilometre) block party through the greatest city in the world," Wittenberg said.

While it may seem like a party to many, it is also a competition for some of the world's best endurance runners. One of the odds-on favorites is Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco. In the last year and a half, Goumri has finished in second place behind runner Martin Lel at three major marathons. Earlier this year, however, Lel broke his foot at a race in Portugal, giving Goumri a chance to win the prestigious New York Marathon.

Even though it helps his chances for victory, Goumri is disappointed that Lel will not be competing.

"I am sad because it's an exciting race," he explained. "Having someone strong at the finish, it's so exciting for me, the marathon, to test yourself."

Elite runners like Lel will likely finish the 26.2-mile route in a little over two hours. One enterprising New York reporter asked himself whether how long it would take to drive the New York Marathon route. In fact, it took the reporter longer to drive the route in New York's notorious traffic than it took last year's winner to complete the route on foot.

Scurrying along in my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, I drove the New York City Marathon course in two hours and 17 minutes, which would have placed me either 11th or 12th in last year's race.

But I could have and would have beaten the winner's time if not for major traffic caused by construction on Fifth Avenue as I approached Central Park, with just three miles to go. Frustrating, indeed. You gotta love New York City traffic, especially when you're so close to finishing the marathon.

What a pleasure it was to watch the thousands of runners from all over the world giving their personal best here in NYC. and being able at the same time, to freeze that moment in my pictures. This girl is detached from her shadow as she floats in the air with the same competitive spirit that energizes everyone.
