Brent Celek Captain Morgan stance

NFL is launching a bitter fight against the unofficial Captain Morgan campaign involving NFL players striking signature Captain Morgan poses on the field.

NFL is fighting to prevent its players from striking Captain Morgan poses on the field. It all began with Philadelphia Eagles tight back Brent Celek showing "a little Captain in him" during the game with Dallas Cowboys last Sunday. Celek raised his right knee in front of television cameras in the signature Captain Morgan pose after scoring a touchdown. The video of Celek's Captain Morgan pose can be seen here.

Captain Morgan is a brand of rum produced by Diageo. The label depicts Caribbean privateer -- Sir Henry Morgan. Captain Morgan pose is a mimic of Captain Morgan's depiction on the rum label -- left knee bent and raised, left arm resting on the knee.

Captain Morgan actually provides charitable contributions when players strike the pose during games. The company promised to give $10,000 to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund -- a non-profit fund for retired NFL players -- for every Captain Morgan pose struck on the field. Captain Morgan was even prepared to pay as much as $100,000 per pose during Super Bowl. But now, NFL wants to initiate penalties for striking Captain Morgan poses on the pitch in an effort to exterminate unsolicited advertising.

NFL is adamant that implicit marketing is not allowed by the League.

"A company can't pay a player to somehow promote it's product on the field," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Yahoo Sports. "Every league has the same rule. … It's come up before, companies trying to use our games and then players for ambush marketing purposes."
“The issue is that players are specifically prohibited under our policies from wearing, displaying, promoting or otherwise conveying their support of a commercially identified product during a game while they’re on the field,” Aiello said. “Whether it’s rum or soft drinks or any other commercial product, that type of promotion is prohibited.”

Striking poses is very popular in sports.

Soccer players are notorious for striking all sorts of different poses: archer, baby lulling pose, thumb sucking, hush finger etc.

College football players often strike the Heisman Trophy pose, imitating the shape of the famous trophy. Even President Obama was caught on camera doing the Heisman Trophy pose.

Track & Field athletes are also bigtime posers - the most famous of them being Usain Bolt who performed quite a dance upon winning the 100-m race gold during the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing last year.

Gee...I didn't know what that pose was...thanks for the post, and video.  On second thought...Usain Bolt's pose was non-commercial, and not necessarily planned in advance.  The rum company was foolish to think they could hijack the NFL players for a pose of Capt. Morgan, even if the poses would initiate charitable giving.  If the NFL were to allow this kind of posing, then every liquor company would get involved!
