NHL All-Star Game 2009: Ovechkin Wows Crowd At Skills Competition
While the NHL All-Star Game has a 6:00pm EST start time, many of the real fireworks took place last night during the SuperSkills competition.
Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara won the Hardest Shot Competition, firing off a slapper that clocked in at 105.4 miles an hour (169.5 km/h). Edmonton's Andrew Cogliano won the fastest-skater competition, beating out Philadelphia's Jeff Carter. League-leading scorer Evgeni Malkin won Most Accurate Shot, and Shane Doan of Phoenix won the Breakaway shootout.
Perhaps the highlight of the night was the trick shot competition. Washington Captials star Alexander Ovechkin won the competition--the NHL's answer to the NBA's Slam Dunk Contest--with a series of creative shots that even involved costumes.
Ovechkin's winning shot had him wearing a funny hat, sunglasses and pulling off a trick shot that had him use two sticks at the same time.
Ovechkin's antics beat out those of Ryan Getzlaf, Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Alexei Kovalev.
