The New York City Half Marathon 2009 took place on August 16. Ethiopian Tadese Tola had the fastest time, finishing the NYC half-marathon route in 1 hour, 1 minute, and 5 seconds. The result fell just short of his best NYC half-marathon time of 1 hour and 58 seconds.

The fastest woman was Briton Paula Radcliffe, who finished in 1 hour, 9 minutes, and 45 seconds. It was her first race after missing nine months with a foot injury. She saw the race as a potential tune-up to running the world championships marathon.

Radcliffe finished ahead of Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia with Catherine Ndereba of Kenya third.
