Haile Gebrselassie Struggles at NYC Half Marathon 2010

Kamais defeated a strong field that included legendary Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia. Gebrselassie did not finish the race after suffering an asthma attack.

"My asthma kicked in from dust in the road," Gebrselassie said in a statement released by New York Road Runners officials. "What are you going to do? It happens."

Prior the asthma attack, Gebreselassie ran near the front of the pack all the way through the opening part of the NYC Half Marathon route that looped through Central Park. He eventually had to stop at the nine-mile mark and seek medical attention.

Mara Yamauchi Triumphs at 2010 New York Half Marathon

Mara Yamauchi of the UK won the women's category of the 2010 New York Half Marathon in a course record time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 17 seconds. She broke the previous record time set by Catherine Ndereba in 2006.

The 36-year-old beat American Deena Kastor by 26 seconds. Kastor had gotten off to an early lead, but Yamauchi managed to rally for the win.
