OJ Mayo-Tony Allen Fight: Grizzlies Brawl Over Boo Ray Debt
OJ Mayo and Tony Allen Reportedly Got Into a Fight Over a Gambling Debt
The Memphis Grizzlies may have a bit of a chemistry issue on their hands. Grizzlies teammates Tony Allen and O.J. Mayo got into a fight on the team plane during the team's flight home from Los Angeles.
What Caused the OJ Mayo Tony Allen Fight?
The OJ Mayo-Tony Allen Fight appears to have been caused by a gambling debt. The two got into a fight over a card game known as Boo-Ray.
By many accounts, Mayo and Allen were involved in a card game that left Mayo owing Allen between $1,000 and $1,500. Mayo refused to pay and repeatedly insulted Allen.
Allen then went to the restroom and returned to Mayo acting more belligerent about losing. Allen then struck Mayo and the two had to be separated by teammates.
What is Boo Ray?
Here is an explanation of Boo Ray rules.
Mayo missed a game after the fight with Tony Allen. Some believe that Mayo's absence may have had something to do with the Tony Allen fight.
Despite the team’s insistence that Mayo missed Tuesday’s game with bronchitis, sources said his absence was connected to the fight with Allen.
It appears that Mayo and Allen were not disciplined for the fight.
After news of the OJ Mayo-Tony Allen fight came out, ESPN columnist Bill Simmons tweeted:
"Tony Allen + OJ Mayo: the latest example of my "all NBA feuds happen because of women or cards" corollary. It's foolproof!"
Simmons may have a point. Back in 2001, Toronto Raptors forward Charles Oakley slapped Tyrone Hill prior to a game because of a gambling debt that reportedly exceeded $50,000.
