Longtime Washington Capitals goaltender and often face of the team Olie Kolzig officially announced his retirement from the NHL after 17 seasons on Wednesday.

It seems like a long time since Kolzig and the Capitals parted ways following the 2008 season, when Cristobal Huet was brought in at the trade deadline, but it's unlikely anyone will forget Kolzig's time in Washington.

The 39-year-old former Vezina Trophy winner ranks 21st in NHL history with 303 career wins.

"Ollie The Goalie" never got to win the cup and now with diminishing skills, he has had to call it quits.  Perhaps he'll get some position with the CAPITALS in a coaching capacity and win a cup that way with the team this season.  Washington goes into the 2009/10 season with great optimism about their chances to win the cup.  No one questions whether this team can score, its the defence and goaltending that will make them either contenders or pretenders.  Lets hope for Ollie's sake, he's with the team when Alexander the Great finally leads them to the promised land.

Unfortunately for Ollie, the Caps hired Arturs Irbe to be their goalie coach, at least for this year.
