Olympic Bird's Nest to become shopping centre
In a surprising move, the Bird's Nest will be converted into a shopping centre in a few years time. Citic Group announced that the Bird's Nest will actively hold sporting and entertainment performances while turning it into a centre for entertainment and shopping.
The Bird's Nest, which was a showpiece of the 2008 Olympics, will be converted into an entertainment and shopping centre in three to five years, Citic Group said here Friday. At the same time, it will seek to hold more sports and cultural performances.
Come to think of it, it does make sense as the Bird's Nest is a major tourism attraction and by converting it into a shopping centre it just maximizes the amount of revenue it will bring in compared to strictly being a sporting centre.

They will have to fill in the roof I suppose - unless they are making it more of a strip mall kind of deal.

Actually your right it is a great idea to turn the Bird's Nest into one large mall. The main reason behind this is actually due to the extremely high maintenance costs which annually amount to almost $10 million dollars. As far as Amy's comment above I think they will turn it simply into a strip mall since it would make more sense (money wise).

I had no idea it costs almost $10 million to maintain it. That is a hefty sum. No wonder they are making it into a mall.

It's sad that it won't be used as a ground to train new athletes but at least it'll be used for something other than overcharging people to go inside to see not much and it's a good idea to help them pay for the costs of it I guess.
