VANOC CEO John Furlong watches Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson lower the Olympic Flame in a miners lantern to touch Canadian soil after he disembarks a Canadian Forces CC 150 Polaris (Airbus A-310) aircraft upon arriving from Athens, Greece at Victoria International Airport where Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, British Columbia (BC) Premier Gordon Campbell and other dignitaries wait to welcome the Flame to Canada for the start of the 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay in Victoria, BC, October 30, 2009.

"The Olympic Flame symbolizes the spirit of the Olympic Games.A flame was lit during the entire event of the Olympics during the ancient Olympic Game known as the Olympic Flame.

A new flame is lit using a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of the Sun at the ancient Olympic Stadium in Olympia, Elis, Greece. The Flame is then transported to the host city where the last runner lights the large Olympic Cauldron by it and this burns throughout the Games. The Flame is extinguished during the closing ceremony. The Olympic Flame was first lit during the opening ceremony of the IX Olympic Games at Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1928. "
