Beijing Olympics Fireworks
55 seconds of the official broadcast of the Olympics Opening Ceremony fireworks display was computer generated, according to a report filed on Monday by the Beijing Times. Thousands of indignant bloggers want their money back.
Anyone who saw the opening to the Bejing Olympics would agree that the fireworks display was exceptional, but those watching at home were tricked into thinking what they saw was real, when some of it was actually CGI.

The fakery was unearthed by a local Chinese newspaper, The Beijing Times, which revealed that a 55-second sequence was created by a visual effects team, which included a series of giant footsteps made by fireworks.

Confusingly, this actually took place in the real ceremony, but the organisers felt that the sequence of 28 footprints would not be accurately captured live, so they faked it.

While the dramatic fireworks display actually happened as portrayed on television, members of the Beijing Olympic Committee said it was necessary to replace live video with computer-generated imagery because the city’s hazy, smoggy skies made it too difficult to see, according to The Beijing Times, which first reported the story.

Committee members also said they were concerned that the helicopter pilot who would have flown overhead to film the fireworks would have been “at risk by making him try to follow the firework route,” according to a quote from a committee member reported in a Daily Telegraph story.

julianw, I like this story. It's good stuff. Interesting that the "fake" fireworks were actually representative of the actual fireworks.  Gives new meaning to the old tape commercial, is it live or is it memorex.  Good story.

Fake or not fake it looks good to me. In the rehersels were other parts, so i think nobody reaaly nows what was real and what was fake.
