An Online Petition to Washington Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder: FIX THE LINES!
http://dcprosportsreport.com/?p=2087
First off, what an ugly, ugly loss. You want a sum up to what ails the Redskins in two words …offensive line.
The Redskins offensive line is truly OFFENSIVE. I honestly believe the horrific play of the offensive line has led to regression in QB Jason Campbell. He is not reading defenses well and his judgment is regressing, but in reality, I think it has more to do with a complete lack of confidence in his front line. They are horrible, down right horrible. Jim Zorn cannot lay too much blame on the shoulder of Campbell without honestly looking at him and his front office. They deserve the blame here.
Let me say as well, the Redskins were going up against a vicious defense. I realize that. BUT, my verbal assault on this offensive line has been weeks in the making. These guys are old. These guys can’t handle pressure. They guys are awful at pass protection, just awful.
BUT, then again, what do you really expect from a franchise that simply has an aversion to young offensive lineman, drafting lineman (both sides of the ball), and investing in the two parts of any team (offensive and defensive line) that can single handily win football games. The adage is truer than ever, you win and lose football games on the Lines, but somehow, someway, Vinny Cerrato and Daniel Snyder have never heard that. It’s pathetic. It really is.
Many of us saw this coming this year when the Redskins failed to address either Line AGAIN, but instead chose three receivers in the second round, none of which have made any impact. But how could they. Despite their lack of knowledge of the offense and their injuries, you can’t get the ball to receivers if your QB is cutting grass with his teeth.
But hey, they fixed the defensive line. They traded a second round pick to Miami for again DE Jason Taylor, who’s best days are clearly in Miami. Good trade eh? But Vinny loves Taylor. It was his masterpiece move of 2008. Might have been the right move at the time, given DE Phillip Daniels injury, but why were we in that position? One, why were we going into a new season with a 35 year old defensive end (Daniels) who has been able to stay healthy for a full season since coming to DC? Why was there not a young defensive end groomed under Carter and Daniels over the past two years? Why?
Are Lineman pick not sexy enough for Cerrato and Snyder? They don’t have the splash other positions do? I honestly think that has something to do with it with this front office. Yet the fan base, the Redskins nation, is crying out to fix the Lines. We don’t want a splash, we want good Lines!
The logic of taking the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE in the Draft is a FAILED policy here in Washington. We have tried that for the 8 years that Snyder has owned the team and it has produced just two playoff seasons, ZERO NFC East Championships, ZERO NFC Championships, ZERO Superbowl appearances, and ZERO consistency with winning.
It’s time to shift the mentality to that of successful franchises, drafting for positions of NEED. Why? because other franchises do it, and they win because of it. If you Never address the positions of NEED then those positions are ALWAYS going to hurt your team, and unfortunately for the Washington Redskins, those positions are the most important on the football field, more so than quarterback, running back, receiver, safety, etc… the OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINES. This front office approach is quickly becoming the model for how NOT TO BUILD a franchise.
The Lines are and will be the most important part of developing success and consistency in success for a franchise. We here at DC PRO SPORTS REPORT call on the Washington Redskins front office to fix the offensive and defensive lines, to stop the aversion to drafting Lineman, to stop the BEST AVAILABLE failed draft policy, to INVEST, whether through draft or free agency, in the offensive and defensive lines. Fix this franchise! Stop this franchise from becoming an annual 8-8 and 9-7 franchise.
We set forth this ONLINE PETITION to the Washington Redskins front office to address the offensive and defensive lines in the 2009 off-season!
