Pacquiao Defeats De La Hoya by TKO in 8
In front of a sold-out crowd of 15,001 at the MGM Grand Arena , The 29-year-old Worl Boxing Champion (WBC) Lightweight Champion Manny Pacquiao, jump to weight classes to defeat the 35-year-old Oscar De La Hoya by technical knockout in the eight round...
“Like I said before, the speed will be the key of this fight,” said Pacquiao. “After the first round, I wasn’t confidant. I’m still careful [with De La Hoya]. I thought he was waiting for the big shot and counterpunch. After the second round, when the bell rang, I think I [hurt] him [but] I’m still not confidant. [I thought] maybe he’s looking for the one shot [knockout].”
Pacquiao is a great fighter,” said De La Hoya before he was sent to the hospital for precautionary measures. “He was the better man tonight. He deserves all the accolades and everything he’s accomplished…He’s just a great fighter. I have nothing else to say about it. He deserves everything.”
When asked about whether this would be his last match, De La Hoya said that he’s going to take some time to think it over.
“I have to be smart and think about my future plans,” he said. “We’ll see what happens. I love this sport.” (www.asianjournal.com)
Golden Boy turn into black and blue
LAS VEGAS — The end for Oscar De La Hoya Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) came as he sat in the corner after the eighth round, his left eye swollen shut and his face bruised by punches Manny Pacquiao seemed able to land almost at will.
The decision to call it a night was easy. The decision to call it a career may be a lot tougher.
"My heart still wants to fight, that's for sure," De La Hoya said. "But when your physical doesn't respond, what can you do? I have to be smart and make sure I think about my future plans."
Pacquiao gave De La Hoya a lot to think about by beating and battering him around the ring for eight rounds Saturday night before De La Hoya declined to answer the bell for the ninth round. The domination was shocking enough, but the fact that it came at the hands of a fighter who just nine months earlier had been fighting at 129 pounds had to be even more troubling for De La Hoya and his legions of fans... Roach, Manny Pacquiao's trainer extraordinnaire, said on Friday that he will personally scrutinize even the minutest detail about the December 7 (December 6, US time) showdown. One such issue that has been brought up is the correct way of taping boxers' hands.
"Between the knuckles, they use what are called fake ligaments. They make (the tape) like a rope and then put it between the fingers," Roach described one technique. "It's actually in the rules that say one strip per tape only, so I think I will win that case."
Roach said he will bring up the issue to the regulations body Nevada State Athletic Commission because of the possibility that Joe Chavez, a former Pacquiao cutman who now works de la Hoya's side, might consider using that method.
"Anything I can do to throw off Oscar I wanna do," Roach added. "That's my job. It's not personal. I just wanna be fair. The rules are rules and that's where we wanna go."
Roach also cited previous instances when he questioned before the Nevada commission attempts by other boxing camps to do similar tricks, mentioning the cases of Marco Antonio Barrera in his rematch with Pacquiao in 2007 and of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his fight with de la Hoya also last year.
"I know the rules and I'm just expecting to be upheld and that's all I ask because we wrap fair," Roach told reporters at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
Roach said he will discuss the rules with the commission on Tuesday, or a day after Team Pacquiao arrives at Las Vegas. "We'll go over what's allowed and what's not and then go from there."
After being slowed down in training by acid reflux on Thanksgiving Day, Pacquiao was in the mood again Friday when he did his usual two-hour training at the Wild Card.

Whatchout!!! The Pacquiao-Hatton Match-up are gaining Momentum...
SPECULATION about a showdown between Ricky Hatton the 'British Star' and Manny Pacquiao, the 'Pambansang Kamao' arguably the world's two most popular fighters, is growing even though there have still been no formal talks between their camps. Hatton's father and manager, Ray Hatton, said he was contacted by journalists in the Philipinnes, Pacquiao's home country, where talk of the bout is apparently generating huge interest. The prospect of the fight was first discussed with Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum six months ago after Hatton's welterweight title defeat by Floyd Mayweather Jr, Ray Hatton said. With Mayweather's recent retirement elevating Pacquiao to the pound-for-pound number one spot, the bout would give Hatton another crack at the most prestigious mantle in boxing.
Pacquiao, kept the possibility of facing Hatton alive last Saturday night when he outclassed and stopped David Diaz in nine rounds to win the WBC lightweight title, his fourth championship in different weight divisions. Pacquiao reportedly weighed 147 pounds by the time he got into the ring, so would have no problem stepping up to junior welter to challenge Hatton.
The 'British Star' outpointed the Mexican-American Juan Lazcano in front of a 58,000 home crowd in Manchester on May 24, but a Pacquiao fight could draw an even bigger gate and a massive worldwide viewing audience...
