Jonathan Papelbon gave up three runs in the 9th inning to blow the save and game for the Boston Red Sox, losing to the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 7-6.  The Angels sweep the series 3-0 and now await to play the winner of the Twins - Yankees series.

It was the first time Papelbon had given up a run in 26 innings of postseason play.  All 3 runs were scored after Papelbon retired the first two batters of the inning.  The Red Sox led 6-4 going into the top of the 9th inning.

For the Angels, the series victory against the Red Sox was a first in their history.  They had been 0-3 against in postseason series against the Red Sox.

“That’s why you play nine innings,” Torii Hunter of the Angels said in a televised interview. “We battled against a good ball club, a good pitching staff and we came through.”
