Patrick Kane, a Chicago Blackhawks right wing, will be charged with misdemeanour assault and theft for the beating of a taxi driver on the night of August 9 in Buffalo, New York. Kane will not face the felony charge of second-degree robbery. Kane pleaded not guilty to either of the charges.

"Yeah, if the felony's dropped that's obviously a positive step - definitely,'' said the 20-year-old Kane, who was at the three-day U.S. Olympic hockey team orientation camp that closed Wednesday.

"The sooner it gets over with, the more everyone will be happy.''
If convicted, the Kanes could get up to a year in jail.

Patrick Kane apologized for the incident to his fans earlier this week.
