Paul Biedermann beat Olympic champion Michael Phelps in the 200-meter freestyle at the Fina World Championships in Rome.  The German came in with a time of 1:42:00, a new world record.

Phelps was first off the blocks, but Biedemann took the lead at the first turn.

He touched the final wall nearly a body length in front of Phelps.

Biedemann and Phelps both wore polyurethane swimsuits, which will be banned by FINA next year. Aside from the wardrobe malfunctions, the suits are now considered an unfair advantage.

"For the moment it is just like a dream. It's such an amazing feeling. I'm so fine," he told reporters.

Michael Phelps was predictably unhappy with the result, but has acknowledged a relatively thin training schedule this year.

Supposedly, Phelps's suit has less polyurethane than Biedermann's suit, which apparently has more buoyance.

Phelps is also a bit out of shape. Nevertheless, good for Biedermann.

This clip has footage of the actual defeat.

"He touched the final wall nearly a body length in front of Phelps," is almost an understatement.
