Pete Newell, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach, Dies at 93
Hall of Fame basketball coach Pete Newell died today at the age of 93.
He was one of only three men to win NIT, NCAA and Olympic championships. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was winning a NCAA championship with UC Berkeley in 1959.
Newell also had an impact on the NBA as General Manager of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1970s. Newell was responsible for bringing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers in a 1975 trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.
In later years, Newell was best known for his Pete Newell Big Man Camp, an intense workshop that helped hone the skills of several NBA stars such as Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, James Worthy, Scottie Pippen, and Sam Perkins. Current NBA players Jermaine O'Neal and Andrew Bynum attended Newell's camp.
