Former NHLer Peter Zezel died at a Toronto hospital due to hemolytic anemia, a rare disease that causes the deterioration of red blood cells. Zezel has fought the condition for the last decade and has recently taken a turn for the worse.
Zezel was scheduled for surgery last week. Reports indicate that Zezel suffered from complications and his health deteriorated.
Zezel spent 15 years in the NHL, mostly with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers. After retirement, he ran a hockey school in the Greater Toronto Area.

I am saddened to hear of Peter's death. He was a fantastic hockey player and a great person. I met him twice when he was here in Philly playing. He never stopped smiling and talked to me like he knew me for years.
I will miss him greatly and extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I had the honour of knowing Peter when he played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the late eighties; he was always smiling and accommodating to his many, many fans - even the fourteen year old girls who continuously trailed him - even to his home! Peter was a real gentleman, a good hockey player, but most importantly, a special person. He will be sorely missed. My love and prayers go out to his family, especially his mother, whom I had the priveledge of knowing a little bit.
