PGA Playoffs End with TOUR Championship by Joe Hachem

Vijay Singh’s early dominance made the FedExCup playoffs a snooze this year, but you can still do some golf betting on the outcome of THE TOUR Championship this week.

The final PGA Tour event that means anything to the average golf fan in 2008, THE TOUR Championship will get underway at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta on Thursday. A limited field will challenge for the trophy over the four days of the tourney; only the top 30 golfers in the current FedExCup standings will be participating this week.

And leading the way there is Singh, who won the first two FedExCup playoff events (The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship) to basically lock up the title. Singh won this tournament back in 2002, and he’s the +450 favorite to win once again.

Following Singh on the odds list are a trio of triumphant American Ryder Cup team members: Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, and Anthony Kim. Mickelson, who won THE TOUR Championship back in 2000, is listed at +800 to win in Atlanta this week. Those are the same odds given to Furyk, while Kim is a step behind them at +900 odds. All three of those golfers are sitting in the Top 10 of the FedExCup standings this season.

Also at +900 odds is Sergio Garcia, who couldn’t conjure up any of his old Ryder Cup magic at Valhalla last weekend. Garcia is behind Singh and Camilo Villegas in the current standings. Villegas won the third FedExCup playoff tournament, the BMW Championship, two weeks ago, and he is listed at +1200 to get the win this weekend.

There are three other past winners of THE TOUR Championship in the field this week: Mike Weir, Chad Campbell, and Billy Mayfair. Sitting fifth in the FedExCup standings, 2001 champion Weir is listed at +1800 odds to win this week. Campbell, who won this tournament in 2003, is at +3500 odds, and he’s the 30th man in the field for the tourney. 1995 champion Mayfair is 28th in the Cup standings, and behind at +9000 on the odds.

Other top contenders to win this week: Ernie Els (+1500), Hunter Mahan (+1800), K.J. Choi (+2000), Justin Leonard (+2200), Kenny Perry (+2800), Stuart Appleby (+2800), Tim Clark (+2800), Steve Stricker (+3000), Robert Allenby (+3000), Stewart Cink (+3200), and Ben Curtis (+3200). Trevor Immelman and Carl Pettersson are at +3500.

If you’re looking for longer shots to win, both Andres Romero and Ryuji Imada are pegged at +4500, with each of D.J. Trahan, Ken Duke, and Briny Baird at +6000, and Dudley Hart at +6500. Bubba Watson is then at +7000, with Kevin Sutherland at +8000.

You can also wager on Top-4 finishes for this week, with Singh pegged at -140 to end up with one of the lowest four scores at the event. Mickelson and Furyk are both at +120 to come away with a Top-4 result, with Kim and Garcia both at +140, and Villegas at +180. Els (+250), Mahan (+300), and Weir (+300) are next on that prop bet right now.

Finally, if you’d like to look further ahead you can already place wagers on the winners of next year’s Masters and British Open, as well as the 2010 Ryder Cup. Tiger Woods is already pegged as the big +150 favorite to come back in style with a 2009 Masters victory, and he’s also listed as the +250 favorite to win the 2009 British Open. As for the 2010 Ryder Cup, the Europeans are pegged at -120 to win, with the USA the +120 ‘dog.
