Phoenix Mercury Unveil New Uniforms With LifeLock Logo
The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury unveiled new uniforms that feature a prominent logo for Lifelock Inc. The new uniforms are a first in North American in that they feature the team's sponsor more prominently than they do the team logo. Corporate logos on uniforms are common in Europe and elsewhere, but is still relatively new to North American sports.
The new uniforms feature the LifeLock logo featured front and center on the uniform. The Phoenix Mercury logo will appear in the upper left corner of the front of the jersey. The upper right corner of the jersey will feature the logo for Adidas, the company that produces the jersey.
The Mercury's deal with LifeLock is for three years and will be worth at least $1 million per year. That's a nice chunk of change for a league that is struggling. Earlier in the year, the WNBA's Houston Comets folded.
Such deals are common around the world, especially in the world of international soccer. Most famously, Champions League winners Manchester United wear uniforms with the with the AIG Insurance logo on it, not exactly a good look considering that the ailing insurer is at the forefront of the current economic crisis. More than a few have pointed out that since the US government has bailed AIG out of a lot their bad deals, Uncle Sam is indirectly sponsoring Manchester United.
Such corporate deals are not unknown in the US. Some Major League Soccer teams feature corporate logos on their uniforms. One team, the New York Red Bulls, is named after their sponsor.
