As a hockey player such an injury seems all to likely to happen. Johnson could have been a little more aware of where Smyth was, but it clearly was not malicious. It was reported that Smyth was walking a couple hours after the incident. Injuries continue to plague the Avalanche, but with Forsberg's return and Sakic's resurgence they seems poised to gain a playoff position.
See the video here.
Smyth was hurt soon after scoring his second goal of the game when Los Angeles defenseman Jack Johnson checked him into a padded partition at the end of the Avalanche bench. He lay motionless on the ice for several minutes but was walking before he was sent to a hospital for a CT scan. He was released from the hospital Saturday night.
