Puck Droppings: Super Tuesday NHL Roundup
For those not interested in the politics of Super Tuesday there were a ton of games in the NHL. We've reached that exciting point in the season where games actual matter. Up until Christmas if a team is doing poorly they can still make the playoffs if they clean up their game (see Vancouver Canucks last season) and the converse is true, if a team starts to slump after Christmas they can no make the playoffs (see Vancouver Canucks this season).
The most exciting and compelling game last night was the Senators Canadiens game. The two best Canadian teams in the NHL are now the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens are 1 point behind the Senators for the conference lead. Last night's win was more meaningful for the Canadiens as Ottawa's star players, Aldfredsson and Heatley, are still on the injured reserve. The Senators have not been able to win without their captain.
In Montreal on Tuesday, the Canadiens led the Senators, 4-1, after two, but had to hold on tight to win, 4-3. Tomas Plekanec connected twice and assisted on an Andrei Kostitsyn goal. The Habs are now just a point behind the Senators and face them again Saturday in Ottawa.
In other news, Ovechkin scored again, his 45th of the season.
“It doesn’t matter what the score is — 2-0, 4-0 — you’ve just got to play,” Alex Ovechkin told the Canadian Press. “We just have to believe in ourselves. We know we can win the game. It doesn’t matter what happens. We’re just growing up.” In overtime, Ovechkin nailed the winner, surprise, surprise.
The most gratifying game for a gloating hockey fan on the West Coast was the Maple Leafs 8 - 0 loss to the Florida Panthers. Eat that Toronto.
The Maple Leafs, now in the race for the top draft pick, were in full phone-it-in mode at home against the not-so-mighty Florida Panthers. The Leafs lost 8-0 as interim GM Cliff Fletcher fumed from his box high atop the Air Canada Center. The debacle was also viewed by 19,430 of the Toronto faithful.
The Vancouver Canucks lost again in the shootout. Marcus Naslund had his best game in months. He scored both regular strength goals and a goal in the shootout. Hopefully this is represents a turn around for the Captain and the team. Luongo was good but not spectacular. Turco was the difference, again.
Brenden Morrow is a grinder, not a shootout expert, but the Dallas captain came through in the sixth round of the tiebreaker to deliver a victory for the Stars.
Elsewhere, the Sabres beat the Bruins, 4-2, to keep their hopes alive, Anaheim blanked the Islanders, 3-0, to keep pace in the tight West, the Rangers shot themselves in the foot by losing to last-place Los Angeles, the Blues continued their slide, dropping a 5-4 game to Tampa Bay

A very hard fought game between the Caps and Jackets where the Jackets tried hard, but just couldn't put it away, and were badly hurt by the loss of goalie Pascal LeClaire in the 2nd period. However, LeClaire is reported to have only suffered a minor neck sprain and is expected to be back in the lineup for Sunday.
