Puck Droppings: Zednick's neck gets cut by skate
Update
The Florida Panthers returned to practice at home on Tuesday morning while teammate Richard Zednik remained in a Buffalo hospital where his condition was upgraded to good.
They may seem back to business as usual, but the Panthers are no doubt still haunted by the ghastly vision of Zednik, who was previously in the intensive-care unit, being taken from the ice on Sunday night.

Last night Richard Zednick received probably one of the scariest and most dramatic injuries in hockey; a skate to the neck. Watch the video here. The fact that Zednick skated off the ice, nearly collapsing when he reaches the bench is testament to his toughness. Thankfully, Zednick is in stable condition.
The Associated Press described the play thusly: “Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres’ zone, when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell. Jokinen fell head-first to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik directly on the side of the neck.”
The game was halted for about 15 minutes and Buffalo GM Darcy Regier could be seen in conference with NHL bigwig Colin Campbell apparently discussing whether to call the game with 9 minutes 56 seconds to go and Buffalo ahead, 4-3.
An announcement was finally made to the audience:
“Richard Zednik is in stable condition and on his way to a Buffalo hospital.” The crowd stood and cheered.
The game resumed and Derek Roy scored to make it 5-3, Buffalo.

I heard hockey is a rough game but could never imagine that injury this serious could happen. I hope Zednick will recover quickly.

It's a shame things like this happen but I don't think it is only reserved for hockey. Yes, hockey is a rough game but a fluky injury like this could happen in any sport, not necessarly with a skate or stick like in hockey, but you enter every game knowing the risks of what can happen. An injury like this is extremely scary and I hope he is able to recover soon and be back on the ice.

You make a good point, especially the fact that players accept the risk when they step on the ice or the field. This was a shocking accident and there was no malicious intent. It's much different than a dirty hit or a punch to the back of the head etc. This incident should not be used to judge hockey.
