Team India for the ODI tri-series in Australia, which involves Sri
Lanka, beginning from 3rd February has been announced since Sourav
Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have been left out of the squad.
The team was announced in Mumbai by BCCI"s Secretary Niranjan Shah.
Though Dravid was not part of the Indian one day team that played against
Pakistan, Ganguly was a regular in the side since his comeback from the wilderness.
Meanwhile, despite rumours about his fitness and an alleged attitude
problem, Yuvraj Singh remained deputy to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Virender Sehwag also retained his place in the 16-member squad for
India"s lone Twenty20 match against Australia, followed by the
tri-series starting on 3rd February.
Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan and Munaf Patel will be on standby, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.
“The three selectors here had a teleconference with two of their
colleagues Ranjib Biswal and Venkatapathy Raju and Dhoni in Australia,
after which the team was selected," Shah said.
Explaining reasons behind ignoring Ganguly and Dravid, Shah said, “The
emphasis was on fielding abilities and they wanted a young fielding
side for the series. That"s why you see a lot of youngsters in the
side."
A Board source said the selectors had an eye on the future and hence
they decided to invest in youth, rather than sticking with the
seniors.Ajit Wadekar and Deep Dasgupta expressed ‘disappointment" over
the decision, Erapalli Prasanna and Kiran More gave thumbs up to the
selectors for the “bold" move.
Former captain Ajit Wadekar termed dropping of Ganguly and Dravid as “unfortunate".“Ganguly has been among runs in recent times. He has a hang of the conditions in Australia, as he has played there earlier. Probably the
selectors thought he would be a bit of a liability on the field,"
Wadekar told.“Rahul"s omission is more unfortunate. He was getting back among runs and he is also very good in the outfield. Though I think it is a
good team, the selectors would have done better by including these
seniors," he said.“We also decided to have three players on standby so that in case of injuries to any players, we can fly them out to help the team," Shah said.
