Red Sox Trade Nick Hagadone, Masterson, Price for Victor Martinez

The Red Sox today traded Nick Hagadone, Justin Masterson, and Bryan Price for Cleveland Indians first baseman and catcher Victor Martinez, just one hour before the 4:01pm trade deadline. Nick Hagadone had only recently returned to the Red Sox after surgery.

They also swapped Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves for Casey Kotchman.

While dealing LaRoche for Kotchman would seem to be a lateral move, the Red Sox regard Kotchman as a better fit for their current roster. Kotchman is viewed as a better defensive first baseman than LaRoche and his simpler approach at the plate should translate to more success coming off the bench.

This will be the second time that LaRoche has been returned to Atlanta.
