The power of a ring is never to be underestimated, ask Tolkien, Verbinski or Kobe Bryant perhaps. All three have conveyed, with varying degrees of eloquence the importance of a ring be it as an omen, a shield or even a saving grace. Although the ring has forever been linked to women as a sign of security, dependence and the sanctity of marriage those days have seen their end and it is now the man that strives for the ring. Awarded for retirement, graduations and world championships, the ring has become a status symbol amongst men.

Major League Baseball player Eric Hinske is experiencing a career resurgence and a ring is the reason why.

The early days

Hinske a seventeenth round selection by the Chicago Cubs in 1998 was named the rookie of the year in his opening season as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. The 2002 season however became a premature pinnacle and after a 24 home-run, 99-run season Hinske simply tailed off. In his remaining 3-3/4 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Hinske’s production was greatly reduced and subsequently the hard-hitting lefty fell out of favour in Toronto.

A new light?

On August 17th 2006 a ray of hope found its way through the sealed roof of the Skydome and Eric Hinske was traded to the contending Boston Red-Sox. Having fallen out of favour in Toronto Hinske was glad to be a new face in an established organization, like wiping the slate clean and starting fresh from the beginning. Hinske would appear in 31 games for the Sox compiling a dismal 8 runs backed by just a single home-run in 80 appearances at the plate thru the remainder of the 2006 season. The 2007 season wasn’t much better for Eric, still a member of the Sox Eric flopped 186 at bats accompanied by 25 runs and just 6 homers but something special happened at the end of the 2007 season. Something that will not only revive Eric struggling career but change his life forever.

The Boston Red-Sox won the world series, Eric Hinske got a ring.. and the rest as they say is history.

Resurgence

Eric joined the Tampa-Bay Rays during spring training this season and has enjoyed leading the once bottom feeding Rays organization to their best start in franchise history. Eric for his part has managed 8 home-runs, 18 runs and a .260 average in just 122 at bats, all the makings of a career season.

If Eric Hinske fails to hit another home-run for the rest of his career, it would be a fair trade as Eric has already got what he came for.

After the fact

Monday night Eric went two for three with a double and a home-run against the Oakland Athletics in a 7-6 thirteen inning win.

Tuesday night at 10:15est Tampa Bay (Kazmir 2-1) -180 @ Oakland (Smith 2-3)

Tampa Bay is on a role and if you haven’t see Scott Kazmir pitch, well it can be quite a treat.

Take Tampa Bay at a payout of 80 cents to the dollar and don’t say I never do anything for you
