Rey Maualuga Surprises Erin Andrews with Sideline Dance
ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews was surprised to receive a quick air-grind dance from University of Southern California linebacker Rey Maualuga during the 2009 Rose Bowl game. Some believe Maualuga's move on Erin Andrews borders on sexual harassment.
Andrews had her back to Maualuga when he creeped up on her from behind and did a quick little dance - which is being hailed as an amusing highlight to the Rose Bowl game by some, and a display of rude behaviour by others:
Rey Maualuga may be an All-American, a Bednarik Award winner, and a Rose Bowl champion, but if he thinks that gives him the right to harass America's Sideline Princess—he's dead wrong. Yes, we've seen the video and we are not amused. Rey must have thought he was pretty funny picking on Erin Andrews when she wasn't looking. This is more like school in the summertime—which as a player for the USC football team I'm sure he knows nothing about.
I say, it all seemed to be in good fun - is Maualuga really at risk of earning the wrath of Erin Andrew's bad opinion? Or could more severe ramifications come to pass for Rey's behaviour, such as charges of sexual harassment?
USC finished the game with a 31-7 lead.

Andrew may have to lighten up a little.

I agree. I just responded to a reader's comment via private message on this issue of sexual harassment, and as a woman I can certainly relate to the need to be treated with respect and professionalism - however in this case, I didn't find the move to be derogatory. Sometimes you just need to have a laugh and get over it.
So far as I can tell, Andrews hasn't yet commented on this. I would suppose that as an attractive female sportscaster, she probably has a pretty tough hide. I would be incredibly surprised if I heard the words 'sexual harassment' from her.

Terri - I am taken aback by your comment on her having a tough hide because she is an attractive female sportscaster. She should not have to address this sort of thing becasue it SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. The dance was absolutely derogatory and degrading. Would Maualuga have done that same dance to a teammate? a coach? a male reporter? Of course not. He did it because she is female and because he feels like he has the right to treat her differently because of her gender. She won't make a big deal about it because she will be dismissed as being to sensitive. People will say "that is why women don't belong on the sideline" rather than taking issue with Maualuga.
It is time for people to stop making excuses for this sort of behavior. Maualuga's actions reinforce the notion that it is OK for men to treat women as less than equal. As long as this is the norm things like domestic violence and rape will continue to have a place in our world. Just listen to the reaction of the guys watching from the stands. They quickly cheered him on and praised him for treating her that way. The message was loud and clear for those men and many others that have seen it on YouTube. Maualuga needs to step up, be a real man, and sincerely apologize for this. Then he needs to volunteer at a rape crisis center or domestic violence shelter for about 6 months so he can see the real impact of sexism.

WOW Ted - You need to chill out a bit. Did he harm her in anyway? Did he Touch Her? How many times has he spoken with her in the past? Does he have repore with her in which joking around would be accepted?
No need to answer, you don't know those answers so quit digging to deep on something you know nothing about. The only thing we need to appologize for is the crazy liberals running around. Now had he done that to one of them (you), it would have been funny.

I fully agree with the fact that this behavior is completely deragtory and degrading. However, i differ from your opinion in the sense that is not just a sexism thing. This is an example of priviledged recruits, not ever having to face consequences for their actions. Maualuga has had 4 years of never having to answer for his actions not one time, so why should it start now? USC players since 2003 have had NUMEROUS arrests for domestic violence against women. just because they arent convicted, doesnt mean it didnt happen. if it were an isolated event that would one thing, but over 25 arrest since 2003, most of which for domestic violence, violence, or drugs is a giant flag that no one is talking about. USC and pete carroll are completely out of control.

It was inappropriate. Not to mention, he looked like some sort of animal at a zoo.

another example of how USC players have no respect for the rules, women, much less any laws (check the police blotter for usc roster names, its loaded with them). Those are the players that USC recruits. But, hey, as long as they win, right? right?? They are the '80's Miami Hurricanes of the 2000 decade.

I think it was hilarious. I put it on my myspace because everytime I watch it i get a good laugh out of it. I think it was all in good fun and all the people taking it seriously should really lightin up and get their panties out of a wad. Most adults can take a joke and I would think that is how Erin Andrews probably took it.
