A minor league baseball team in Richmond, VA has announced a new name: the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The name Richmond Flying Squirrels was selected from more than 6,000 entries in an online contest.

The Flying Squirrels name was selected out of several finalists which included the Richmond Flatheads, Richmond Rhinos, Richmond Rock Hoppers, and Richmond Hush Puppies. Another selection was the Richmond Hambones, which was disqualified because of its perceived negative racial connotations.

The Flying Squirrels name was submitted by fan Brad Mead.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels also unveiled a new website. The team will now get to work on designing a Richmond Flying Squirrels logo.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels will begin play in the Eastern League in 2010.

I cant believe how our team could be called something so stupid! Please change the name because our team will be the laughing stock of the league! I wonder who's idea was it to say, OKAY, LET'S MAKE FUN OF OUR CITY!!!!                                                         example.........THE RICHMOND CAPITALS, RIDERS, RUNNERS, ROLLERS, RANGERS, PIRATES, BANGERS...........anything but the, "FLYING SQUIRRELS"     And even if the name doesn't get changed........I WANNA PLAY!
