Rob Dibble Fired for Stephen Strasburg Injury Comments
Rob Dibble, color commentator for the Washington Nationals, was fired on September 1 following comments on pitcher Stephen Strasburg's injury. Dibble, who has been with the Nationals for less than a year, said that Strasburg should "suck it up" when he left the field during an August 21 game against the Phillies. It turned out, though, that Stephen Strasburg's injury was major, and that he'd need ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery.
Rob Dibble, himself a former pitcher, had said, "So for me, a little bit has to be put back on Strasbug here. Ok, you throw a pitch, it bothers your arm, and you immediately call out the manager and the trainer? Suck it up, kid. This is your profession. You chose to be a baseball player. You can't have the cavalry come in and save your butt every time you feel a little stiff shoulder, sore elbow."
The Nationals' management was not impressed by Dibble's commentary, and dumped him with 13 months left on his contract.
During his season and two-thirds in the Nationals' broadcast booth, where he replaced Don Sutton, Dibble was a lightning rod, stirring up the fan base with the style and substance of his analysis. Favored words included "we," "us," "our" and "smack 'em yack 'em," which became his signature home-run call, and the strike zone was a personal obsession of his.
