Event: UEFA Champions League 2008-09 Final - Barcelona Vs. Manchester United

Date - 27th May 2009

Venue - Rome, Italy

The Eternal City of Rome braces itself for the Grand Finale of the UEFA Champions League where United take on Barcelona on Wednesday with the aim of becoming the first team to defend the Champions League title.

Many have debated the choice of the venue to host the final of Europe's premier football event. Rome has had a bad history of the stabbing incidents in the past especially during the Champions League Games in the recent past. There have been issues about the tickets, about the security, about alcohol banning but come this match, everything else should take a back seat and the football should take over. Hopefully that is what will happen.

However, it is a beautiful city and a great stadium to host a fitting finale to what has been a great tournament with probably the two best teams in Europe battling it out for the coveted crown of Champions. It will be a clash that has been deemed to be "The One That Decides The Best Team on The Planet".

Manchester United have won the competition 3 times so far and their opponents Barcelona have bagged the honors 2 times. However a piece of history that Manchester United themselves and the fans will be proud of is that on all the 3 occasions that their team has made it to the final, they have won it.

Both teams have had their star names rested over the weekend with both the teams winning their respective leagues before the final day of the season. Both have won the league as well as the league cups and are looking forward to a historic treble. It will the second time around for Manchester United but a first time in the history of Barcelona.

Of course there have been talks of it being a battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, I believe it will not be a gladiatorial affair as it is being touted. Both teams have great sets of talents and it will be the question of who performs better on the day and who holds their nerves better.

We are hours away from the kick off. An estimated audience of a staggering 150 Million people around the world will witness the spectacle. The popularity can also be gauged by the fact that fans were offered more than double of the ticket prices to persuade them to sell but none did. Who would? No one in my honest opinion. A moment of a lifetime cannot match a few thousand bucks.

A party atmosphere is gripping the Eternal City and we expect a great final. Roll on the time, let the game.. Begin!

This is a great perspective on the venue Samir.  It sets the stage for what is about to happen in a few hours.

Let's all hope that there won't be any violence and that this game promotes the worlds greatest game in a positive way.

Yeah, I will be watching it too. I wished I could go to Rome to watch this epic. Anyways, I wish both the teams all the best.

May the best team win!

A very exciting event and a "gladiatorial affair" indeed.

Watching football during school? That sounds like a good time!

It was a special day in school. That's how much Mexico likes soccer.

Yeah, Barca Won!

It didn't please me though as I am a die hard Red Devil...

However, Barca just controlled the match after their first goal and then Man Utd were just chasing the game. Could have hoped for a better match for a final, it was too one sided for most parts of the game.

However, it has been a brilliant season for both the teams and the better team on that day won!

Congratulations to Barcelona and a pat on the back for Manchester United.
