Ruhr-Marathon is worldwide the only twin-marathon. The 5th Ruhr-Marathon started on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at two places: Oberhausen at the Western side and Dortmund at the Eastern border of the Ruhr area. Runners for the whole distance met at Gelsenkirchen and ran together to the final destination at Essen. The run was dominated by Kenyan participants. Henry Cherono won in 2 h 11 min and 10 sec. Female winner was Mary Ptikany with 2 h 36 min. Kevin Peterson from Essen was the best German runner with the same time like Mary Ptikany (2:36) Some 20.000 runners in total included walkers, inline skaters and wheelchair drivers.
