Ryan Hawks Dead: Free Skier Dies at Freeskiing Championships

Noted big-mountain skier Ryan Hawks has died after a suffering a serious injury during the North American Freeskiing Championships  at Lake Tahoe's Kirkwood Ski Resort.

The Ryan Hawks injury occurred when he attempted a back flip off a clip and landed awkwardly. Hawks was treated by emergency workers on the spot and later transported by helicopter to a local hospital where he died on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. He was just 25 years old.

Hawks was a member of the Green Mountain Freeride team from Vermont.
