Samuel Wanjiru installed as a kikuyu elder
Nyahururu. Kenya The 2008 Beijing Olympics Marathon champion Samuel Kamau Wanjiru has been installed as a Kikuyu elder during his home coming ceremony in Nyahururu town. Thousands of fans thronged the streets to see the star and to have a glance of the first gold medal ever in the Kenyan Olympic Marathon.
Operations stood still in the small towns as hundreds lined up on the main Nairobi Nyahururu highway in honour of the hero who toured the town acknowledging greetings atop his car in company of his wife Trizah Kamau.
During the installation ceremony, Wanjiru was given a spear which signifies that he is supposed to guard the community. He was also given a traditional Kikuyu elder attire and a head mask. Later he was given fermented porridge which was in a guard by his wife Trizah which acording to the tribe tradition, that confirms that he is married to her.
In his speech, Kamau accepted the honour of being an elder and pledged to safe guard and promote the community values and culture. He also challenged the youths to refrain from taking drugs and instead to endevour in realising their talents and working their best to attain their live dreams.
