Walthamstow Stadium, in London, was opened in the late 1920s by William Chandler. From very poor beginnings in East London, Chandler had originally started out as an illegal street bookmaker, with runners standing on street corners all over London's East End.
Today, the stadium is still wholly owned by descendants of the founder and has the largest attendance and gambling turnover in the UK (with on-course market turnover of approximately £50m a year and off-course turnover of approximately £300m a year).
