Schweinsteiger Scores 2, to solidify FC Bayern 2:1 Win over FC Basel
Schweinsteiger’s last minute Goal ensures win and another three points for FC Bayern in Champions League Competition.
FC Bayern won it’s first Match in the Group Phase against AS Roma and would try to gain three more points against FC Basel today.
After ten minutes the score was still 0:0, but Bayern looked to be quick and sure of their combinations. Tony Kroos did a great job on the right side and Van Bommel was able to deliver a few passes into the 16 meter area. FC Basel to this point hardly got close to the ball.
Bayern certainly looked better than last weekend against Mainz. Ball possession was 76% to 24% for FC Bayern.
Despite the great ball possession, it was FC Basel that scored first in the 18th minute. Alexander Frei the ex Bundesliga Borussia Dortmund player. After a missed pass by Bayern, Valentin Stocker was able to capture the ball, he passed to Marco Streller on the left side of the penalty area, who sees Frei, who put it in the net. 1:0 FC Basel.
FC Bayern acted insecure after the goal, while Basel turned their offensive play down a notch. Van Bommel delivered many passes, but often imagination lacked. Basel went into the halftime break leading 1:0.
At the start of the second half Louis Van Gaal replaced Hamid Altintop with Mario Gomez. Was it enough to make a difference?
In the 55th minute , Bastian Schweinsteiger, did make a difference. After Thomas Mueller was fouled and Bayern awarded a penalty kick, Schweinsteiger took three steps and put the ball into the lower right corner of the net. Basel’s keeper Franco Constanco took a dive into the opposite direction. 1:1.
In the 57th minute, Kroose was replaced by Olic. This essentially gave Bayern three strikers, Olic, Klose and Gomez.
