NP Rank:
Scotland and Wales cancel football Euro bid
The credit crunch has claimed another victim, this time it's football.
Scotland and Wales have cancelled plans for the two nations to joint host the Euro 2016 football tournament because of the global economic crisis.
The cost would have been too much, both nations have said.
European countries have until 9th March to apply to host Euro 2016.
Until today only France has submitted an application.
Scotland and Wales have ditched plans for a joint bid to host Euro 2016 because of the global economic crisis.
With European governing body Uefa set to expand the event to 24 teams for 2016, there was concern that the costs would have been prohibitive.
Both countries would have had to spend many millions upgrading and building new stadia for the tournament.
Federations have until 9 March to apply to host Euro 2016, but so far only France has submitted an application.
Talks over launching a joint bid had been held between the Scottish Football Association and the Football Association of Wales last year.
But the only ground in Wales that currently meets Uefa's requirements for a major event is Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

To be honest, and I know this may not please certain readers, I am very happy with this decision.
I have visited most of the stadiums that would have been likely candidates, but, because I haven't seen them for some years, I did some googling to see what they look like now.
Quite frankly, and from what I saw, I think that even in times-a-plenty that these two countries have better things to do with their taxpayers' money than to pour it into what appears to me to be the major renovation work needed to bring those stadiums up to scratch. And that's without taking other major considerations (transport, infrastructure in general) into consideration!!
Wales and Scotland are not the kind of major world economies that can afford to pay the initial debt incurred by financing international sporting events of this size for no other reason than prestige that won't pay in the long run.
Tough, but true.....I'm sad, sure, but that's how it is.
But, if they are so intent on spending money on 2016, how about if they put it into finding and bringing up the young talent needed to win it!!!
I'd be genuinely pleased to see that!!

Yea, someone had the correct idea.
Scotland/Glasgow are hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2012. Think that will do for now.
Nice to see footie here at some point though.
They came close to it a few years ago to joint host it with Ireland.
